Pushing it forward

For our first edition we talked to multi-disciplinary UX leaders who have been torch bearers for human-centred design.

A message from the editor

Gareth Dunlop

As former US President John Quincy Adams observed, a leader’s actions inspire others to “dream more, learn more, do more and become more”. That sentiment rings through the pages of our inaugural edition of the Journal of UX Leadership, where the design leaders we spoke to recalled myriad experiences from their early careers where a leader or mentor lit a fire for them which has never been dimmed.

They now feel it’s their turn to spark that inspiration for others just starting out on their design careers.

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”

— John Quincy Adams

A former VP of Design at Facebook said she had all but given up on design until Richard Saul Wurman gave a guest lecture at her art school and turned her understanding of the discipline on its head, evangelizing between expletives “Design is not about you. It’s about helping people make sense of the world”.

Another leader, currently UX Director at Shopify shared her experiences with her first agency boss as she moved from a content role into her first UX-focused role. He gave her the time and space to experiment and learn, he backed her ideas and he generously offered up his own time to support the work.

The result was that she was able to embed content design into the heart of that agency’s UX processes, helping the business to win more work and empowering her to contribute more to the agency and its clients.

The people we spoke to are leading in lots of different ways. Some are building out insight-led design cultures. Others are pioneering methods of collaborating with colleagues and clients. Yet others are helping senior colleagues connect customer-centricity with the bottom line.

UX gives design purpose because at its kernel it helps people better understand the world. Despite trends coming and going, changing seasons and maturing technology, the role of the UX leader is unchanged since the leaders we spoke to were starting out.  It’s not about being the smartest person in the room – it’s about reinforcing to those who follow why we do what we do.

Feeding the user-first mindset

It's good to know your market but it doesn't help you solve unmet needs. And that's the gold dust that everybody should be aiming towards.

The challenge of designing for organizations

The design of enterprise software gets a bad rap. But Rick has found the secret is balancing the needs of the organization with the needs of the individual user.

Process as a superpower

The unique skill of designers is to be able to visualize an hypothesis and bring people together. Combining that with an understanding of the business and speaking its language has allowed Frank to have his biggest impact as a designer.

The language of design

Design leaders don't just have to come from a visual background. Elizabeth has applied her skills in content to tackle design and product problems as she leads an ambitious UX program at Shopify.
